6 years ago I decided to learn about WordPress theme development to help further my knowledge and to gain some valuable new skills in a CMS that currently has a large market share and yields a lot of job opportunities.

It was a CMS I had heard a lot of people talk about and I wanted to find out more. I followed some online tutorials and that began my education with WordPress.

    WordPress Logo

I successfully introduced WordPress in my previous Junior Web Developer role at my previous company and when I joined Urban Element in 2015, I bought my WordPress expertise to the company. We now work with WordPres as a CMS.

    Reaching new milestones

I turned 5 and 30 all in the same year!

During lockdown I entered a new decade – 30 years old and also reached 5 years of employment with Urban Element. During April, we successfully launched a new e-commerce website using WooCommerce which has helped them push the clients international sales and allows them to produce better reporting in order to drive more sales.

I am currently working on some new exciting projects that hopefully will go live soon.

    Refreshing my portfolio

After two years it is time to start a fresh and work on a new website that evolves as I progress through my career as a Web Developer. I am keen to further develop my skills. I am going to take this opportunity to gain some experience in new things. These are:

    • SCSS – Allowing for more modularised styling with projects
    • Pattern Libraries – Explore their use in my work
    • Frameworks

I would then like to begin working with REACT.

Thanks to my work colleague I know have a logo which will feature on the new design. The design I am currently producing that I will hopefully present the evolution of my skill set as I have moved from Junior to Middle-Weight roles.

    WordPress Oxford

After a short break, we resumed WordPress Oxford (WPOX). It was great to be joined by some regular faces and some new ones. We discussed some of the key takeaways from the recent WCEU2020 – WordCamp Europe.

We also discussed great ways to learn WordPress as a CMS and shared plugins and themes that may be useful for the other attendees. Hopefully in the near distant future we will be able to invite some guest speakers along.

    The Akeman Benefice

I am currently in the process of working with “The Akeman Benefice” to build them a new website that helps engage their community of seven parishes across North Oxfordshire.

Working on simplifying the website to improve search-ability across the website and also make it easier to promote regular and one off events more easily as well as adding service listings more prominently on the website rather than as a PDF download.
