Sed fermentum faucibus purus.

The Akeman Benefice came to me with an existing website that wasn’t working well for them. They weren’t getting the level of engagement they had hoped from the local church community. It also took a lot of volunteer time to maintain various parts of their site.

In partnership I worked to build a fully responsive WordPress website that enabled them to engage with a wide audience to promote events, services and provide information about the Benefice. The Benefice is a collection of seven churches based in North Oxfordshire.

This meant the website needed to be focused on the wider community I needed to cater for. It needed to be easy to maintain and help support multiple users to take ownership of certain areas of the website.

Their previous site lacked an identity of a religious organisation. The page structure needed to be simplified in order for the content to be easily found by users. It also gave the appearance of a blog rather than an informative brochure website.

The Benefice has some beautiful churches which needed to find a home on the website and to bring the website to life.

As well as being a space for providing information there were some key functional requirements that were a necessity to the build. These were:

  • Dynamic Church Service Lists
  • Events Module
  • Individual Landing Pages for Churches

Dynamic Church Service Lists

Dynamic (live) Church Service Lists were something that Gareth requested early on in the project. They had always listed all of the services in each of the churches across all seven sites in a PDF file.

Now with the new site, each church does have the ability to add their own services for their church and have them visible on the main services page and also on the individual church pages.

Events Module

As the community is the heart of the church benefice it was important to have space to promote their events, This is visible on the homepage, a dedicated events page and also on the church landing pages which dynamically pull through only the events specifically for that site.

There is potential to add additional data capture in the future if this is necessary.

Individual Landing Pages for Churches

Each church site has the ability to maintain their own space on the site. This includes a history page, any site specific announcements, how to find/contact details, events module and photo gallery.
